The Nod: Chapter Three. “Rivers and Pools”

Rivers and Pools

“Go deeper.”

The knife slides across the cheek, blood following the blade.

“Think this will work?”

“It would work on me.”

A larger knife is pulled out.

“You ready to talk yet?”

“Take it off.”

The hand is grabbed and held on the table.

“Which one?”

“Fuck him up. Take the thumb.”

Weight his put on the knife, ripping skin, tearing tendons, crushing through bones.

The severed thumb lies in a growing pool.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

A call from the darkness below. “Just let me in.” Slurred.

“It’s been two years. What do you want?”

“I want to come inside.”

Concrete steps are cold against drunken thighs.

Sitting and waiting. Thinking of running, leaving.

The door opens slightly.

“What do you want?”

“To come in.”

“You can’t just show up after two years and expect me to let you in.”

Silence.

“What do you want from me?”

Darkness.

“Where did you go?”

Cold.

“Are you okay?”

A pool of blood. Red rivers from fingertips.

“What happened?”

“Can I come in?”

The body dragged up two flights of stairs. Rivers and pools of blood following.

“My star is fading.”

“What?”

“Falling asleep.”

“No. You have to stay awake. Fuck. You’ve lost a lot.”

The shirt is ripped open, tugging in places at torn skin.

“Oh fuck this is bad. Who did this to you?”

“Just losing control.”

“We need this to stop.”

Blood stains hands and carpet.

A rag pressed against the wound. An emergency phone call.

“It’s because I knocked out his tooth again.”

“Stop talking. Be still.”

“Need to get up. Need to go back.”

“You’re not going anywhere.”

“Going to sleep.”

The return. The nightmare that comes back time and time again. Slightly different. Exact.

Sometimes you might be able to change certain events.
